Biographical Sketch

Everett McWithey was a teacher in the Long Branch school system. During the early 1970s, he traveled throughout Monmouth County, as well as other counties in New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania, taking photographs of one-room schoolhouses. His wife, Ruth, and friend, Erma Dorrer, often accompanied him.

Scope and Content

Series I. Exhibit Labels contains labels made presumably by McWithey. The date and location of the exhibit is unknown.

Series II. Newspaper Clippings contains articles published between 1963 and 1989 about school buildings in Monmouth County towns and townships. Other New Jersey counties and other states are also represented, as well as a few items regarding education in general.

Series III. Photographs contains 8x10 inch black and white and colorized photographs of schoolhouses (mostly one-room) taken between 1971 and 1973, with one item from the 1950s. There are notes by McWithey on the back of the photographs, stating the name and location of the school building and the date the photograph was taken. Some notes remark on the building's usage at the time it was photographed. There are additional dates on some and page numbers, implying the images were published, although no publication is known. See Appendix for the specific names and locations of the schoolhouses.

Provenance: Acc. #2001.01, gift of Erma Dorrer
Restrictions: None
Size of collection: 1 linear foot; 3 boxes

Conservation Notes

All of the photographs are mounted onto acidic cardboard, which could not be removed. Some of the images are colorized. The original newspaper clippings were photocopied, the copies filed, and the originals discarded.
