Taylor-Butler House, an elegantly appointed Victorian mansion situated on five wooded acres within the Middletown Village Historic District, was built in 1853 by Joseph Dorset Taylor and his bride, Mary Holmes Taylor. The house reflected the wealth and status that they had acquired in New York's China trade, as well as their pride as descendants of one of Monmouth County's oldest families. The house stayed in the family until 1930.
Lovingly restored in the 1940s by architect Henry Ludwig Kramer, the house is one of the finest examples of the Victorian Italianate style still standing in Monmouth County. The Monmouth County Historical Association purchased the property from the estate of George W. Butler who lived there since the 1950s and planted many of the holly trees that decorate the grounds.
Please be aware that with the charm of this type of site come some limitations. Like many historic houses, the Taylor-Butler House has no air conditioning and at this time is not yet handicapped accessible.
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR RENTAL
Arrangements for Use - Use of the building must be arranged with Monmouth County Historical Association, 70 Court Street, Freehold, N.J. 07728, at least one month before the date of use, on a first come, first-served basis. A contract must be completed and signed and payment made before use. The most recent edition of the Rental Agreement and Rental Information shall supercede all prior existing forms.
Capacity and Use - Parties are limited to 125 people.
Insurance - Renters will be required to provide a liability insurance policy which names the Monmouth County Historical Association as an additional insured for the course of the event in the amount of $1,000,000 for both bodily injury and property damage. This coverage would be available through a blanket policy on a certificate basis, sometimes called a "special events policy." If you have a tenant's (renter's) policy, this would be available as a rider to increase liability coverage. A certificate of insurance must be received thirty (30) days prior to the event or the event may be cancelled.
On-Site Staff - Monmouth County Historical Association provides an event liason staff person who is on-site during any event and during event preparation hours to oversee activity and troubleshoot any site-related issues that arise.
Smoking Policy - Smoking is not permitted in the house under any circumstances. Smoking may be considered outdoors if at least fifty (50) feet away from house. All cigarette butts must be cleared away.
Open Flame - The fireplaces at Taylor-Butler House are not operable. No open flame is permitted. Battery operated candles only.
Parking - For events with more that 60 guests, the renter must use a valet parking service. Additionally, arrangements must be made with the Middletown Police Department for traffic control for any event using valet parking. The Captain may be reached at 732-615-2050. Arrangements may be made with the Middletown Board of Education for permission to use the parking lot at the Middletown Village School located at 145 Kings Highway. That phone number is 732-671-3850, ext. 1178. Or, one of the neighboring churches may be contacted for permission to use their parking lots for remote parking.
Caterer - If the renter is serving food or liquor, s/he must make direct arrangements with her/his own caterer. There is no cooking food in the kitchen oven. The oven may be used for heating foods and the refrigerator may also be used. Kitchen floor must be mopped and premises must be broom clean prior to departure. Trash and recyclables should be placed in garbage bags supplied by you and taken with you. The caterer must contact MCHA at least 30 days prior to party to discuss further details of kitchen use.
Alcoholic Beverages - The Monmouth County Historical Association does not permit the serving of alcoholic beverages to anyone under the age of 21 or to anyone who appears to be intoxicated. Any time alcoholic beverages are to be served, food and non-alcoholic beverages must also be served. Kegs are not permitted at the Taylor-Butler House. Use of illegal drugs or any illegal substance is prohibited at all times. All liquor must be served by professional bartenders.
Trash Removal - All trash must be sorted prior to disposal in bags provided by the renter or caterer. Bottles and cans must be placed in a separate container to be recycled. All remaining trash must be double bagged to avoid spillage. Trash and recyclables must be taken with renter or caterer.
Rest Rooms - Two lavatories are available for use in the house. For parties over 100, it is recommended that porta-johns be rented.
Decorations - No tacks, staples, tape or glue may be used to attach decorations to walls, woodwork, metalwork or floors. Mantles and windowsills must have a protective covering before decorations or floral arrangements are placed on them. The use of balloons, confetti, rice or birdseed are prohibited inside or outside the building. Balloons may be used for decoration inside the building. All decorations must be removed by the renter immediately following the event, unless other arrangements have been made.
Music - Amplified music is permitted in the Taylor-Butler House only through the existing system which utilizes a Mackie 12-channel line mixer, Model no. 1202-VLZ Pro, and may be operated only by a person designated by Monmouth County Historical Association. A CD player, which accommodates up to 5 CDs, and continuous uninterrupted music channels via satellite are also available at no additional charge.
Property Damage - The renter will pay for any property damage or unusual cleaning fees incurred during use. The individual signing the letter of agreement assumes responsibility for said fees. A refundable security deposit of $1,000 must be paid thirty (30) days before the scheduled use of the building. Following the event, upon inspection by the Monmouth County Historical Association, the security deposit shall be refunded providing there is no damage. If damage is present, MCHA shall use the security deposit to affect repairs. If the security deposit is not sufficient, user shall be responsible for additional cost.
Required Licensing - Proof of proper licensing is the responsibility of the renter and must be furnished and posted during public events. A liquor license is required whenever there is a cash bar or admission is charged. A raffle license is required whenever there is a drawing for a prize worth more than $50. Proof of licensing shall be supplied to MCHA prior to the event.
Time - Established time limits for all functions will be strictly adhered to and will not be extended. Bars must close ½ hour before the end of the function. All events must end by 11:00 p.m.
Children - For the safety of children under 12 attending events or receptions, they must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Pets - No pets or animals, other than seeing-eye dogs, are permitted in the Taylor-Butler House or the grounds.
